The Hell There Is: An Exploration of an Often-Rejected Doctrine of the Church by Rev. Msgr. Charles Pope

Of all the theological errors commonly held today, the most popular is surely the denial of the doctrine of hell. With characteristic clarity and candor, Msgr. Charles Pope confronts one of the most widespread and dangerous misconceptions in modern Christianity. Even among self-described believers, hell is often dismissed as empty, symbolic, or incompatible with God's mercy. In *The Hell There Is*, Msgr. Pope dismantles this false narrative by grounding faith in Scripture and Tradition rather than the comfortable sentimentality that dominates modern thought. He demonstrates how the denial of hell inevitably leads to a diminished God—one stripped of justice, moral authority, and saving power. To reject the doctrine of hell is not compassion, but a profound distortion of the Gospel. Through rigorous biblical and theological examination, Msgr. Pope shows that hell occupies a central place in Christ's own preaching. Jesus speaks of eternal punishment frequently and plainly—not to terrorize, but to call sinners to genuine repentance and eternal salvation. This book restores doctrinal truth, moral seriousness, and an urgent awareness of what is truly at stake in the choice between salvation and damnation.
