Description

A Cherished Devotion to the Patron Saint of Cuba

This statue of the Virgin of Charity (La Virgen de la Caridad), the beloved patron saint of Cuba, is a powerful symbol of hope, faith, and protection. Her shrine in the town of El Cobre remains the most important religious site on the island, drawing pilgrims from around the world. Loved by both Catholics and those of other traditions, she stands as a unifying figure of devotion and grace.

History of the Devotion:
In 1608, two Indigenous men and a young slave boy discovered a small statue of the Virgin Mary floating on the water, holding the Christ Child and a gold cross. The board beneath bore the inscription, “Yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad” (“I am the Virgin of Charity”). After being placed in a hut, the statue miraculously vanished three times, each time reappearing on the hill above El Cobre—where her shrine now stands as a place of prayer and miracles.
