Day 2 of 33 Consecration of St. Michael Archangel
Day 2
Of Some Excellencies of the Great Prince Saint Michael the Archangel
Consider the ardent zeal of the Prince of Angels, Saint Michael,
prime minister of God, Governor of the Holy Church, and Protector of the
entire Catholic Religion, who has taken upon himself the patronage of men,
and wants to perform, by himself, for their good, all the duties that all nine choirs
could perform. Precisely for this reason, that strong and great Angel of the
Apocalypse, who, according to important scholars, is Saint Michael,
wore as a crown the Rainbow that has a variety of colors, because it is the
glory of this supreme Archangel to have the variety of offices of the three
Hierarchies and of the three orders of each one. Consider how Saint Michael
is the first of those seven Spirits so celebrated in divine letters, through whom,
Clement of Alexandria says, God presides over men, Saint Michael receiving,
immediately, from God, the orders and giving them to the others; They also make use
of inferior ministers to carry out their duties. Through this universal government, it is
up to Saint Michael to point out to each person the Angel who will guard them; and
we must give Saint Michael many thanks for the Angel he has given us.
This pious Prince is not content with designating a Guardian Angel for each
person to guard and defend them, but on various occasions or in particular needs,
or for the excellent virtues of some pure souls, he designates and sends more
Angels to guard, defend, and accompany them.
Grateful, then, for so many favors and such singular graces that we receive through
the intercession of Saint Michael, we must be very devoted to him,
considering his excellences, imitating his virtues, continuing his praises,
and increasing the number of his devotees, and invoking him in all our needs
with confidence, so that his protection and the great love with which he looks
upon us may be effective.
Example:
In one of the oldest literary monuments of early Christianity, we are told an
example that undoubtedly shows us the grandiose conception that the first
Christians had of Saint Michael.
In the book entitled The Shepherd of Hermas, Hermas tells his Master or
Shepherd about a heavenly vision he had had.
In this vision, a heavenly messenger appeared to him, armed with an axe,
cutting the branches of a very large tree, whose height and beauty remained
undiminished by the pruning. At the same time, he offered a branch to those
sheltered under the tree.
Hermas earnestly asks his Shepherd to tell him the name of this mysterious
figure. The Shepherd answers: This figure is the Angel Saint Michael,
protector of your people; he is the one who engraves in the hearts of the
Divine Law represented by the tree, weighs the deeds of men, defends
the good with his power, He offers the guilty a means of atoning for their
sins and sends those who have fought against them to heaven.
Final Prayer for Every Day
O God, our refuge and strength! We supplicantly implore your mercy,
so that through the intercession of the ever-
Immaculate Virgin and our Mother, Mary, and of the glorious Saint Michael
the Archangel, you may deign to help us against Satan and all other
unclean spirits who infest the world for the harm of mankind and the
ruin of souls.
Cast them into the abyss and remove them from us forever. Amen.
