The Story of Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Bernadette
In 1858, a humble 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous experienced a series of visions at the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, France. She saw a radiant lady dressed in white with a blue sash and yellow roses at her feet, who asked her to pray the rosary.
Over the course of 18 apparitions, the Blessed Virgin Mary urged Bernadette to pray for sinners, drink from a spring beneath the grotto, and tell the priests to build a chapel. That spring still flows today, known as the Lourdes water, believed by many to bring miraculous healing.
Though met with skepticism at first, Bernadette remained faithful. Lourdes has since become one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world, drawing millions each year seeking healing and renewal. Bernadette later entered religious life, dedicating herself to prayer and service, and is remembered for her humility, faith, and obedience to Mary’s call.
